How it is calculated

The Bitcoin you hold is valued at the sale price; the fee on each trade, India’s tax on the gain and the 1% TDS are then taken into account.

  • Cost = Bitcoin held × average buy price × (1 + fee)
  • Sale value = Bitcoin held × sale price; you receive the sale value × (1 − fee)
  • Tax = tax rate × (sale value − cost); nothing on a loss, and the sale fee is not deducted
  • Profit after tax = money received − cost − tax
  • Break-even price = cost × (1 − tax rate) ÷ (Bitcoin held × (1 − fee − tax rate)), where profit after tax is exactly zero
  • Price for a target = (target profit + cost × (1 − tax rate)) ÷ (Bitcoin held × (1 − fee − tax rate))

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on working out profit on Bitcoin in India.

The profit on Bitcoin you hold if you sell at a price you choose. Say you hold 0.05 BTC bought at an average of ₹50,00,000 and sell at ₹80,00,000, with a 0.5% fee each way and tax at 31.2%. The Bitcoin cost ₹2,51,250 with the fee and sells for ₹4,00,000. You make ₹1,46,750 before tax and ₹1,00,340 after ₹46,410 of tax.

Because of fees and the way tax is worked out. The buy fee raises your cost, the sale fee lowers what you receive, and tax is charged on the sale value less your cost, with no deduction for the sale fee. In the example you break even after tax at ₹50,61,786.24, 1.24% above your ₹50,00,000 average.

Enter the profit you want to keep after tax and the calculator works out the Bitcoin price you need. To take home ₹2,00,000 of profit from the 0.05 BTC above, Bitcoin would have to reach ₹1,09,18,301.61. The table marks it alongside your sale price and the break-even.

Gains on Bitcoin and other crypto are taxed at a flat 30% under section 115BBH, plus 4% cess, making 31.2%. Only what you paid can be deducted, not fees or other costs, and a loss cannot be set off against any other income. The exchange also deducts 1% TDS on the sale under section 194S. No. The TDS is deducted from the sale and credited against your income tax when you file, so it is part of the tax, not on top of it. In the example ₹4,000 of TDS is taken from the ₹4,00,000 sale, and the rest of the ₹46,410 tax is paid when you file. If you made a loss, the TDS is refunded.

Yes. One Bitcoin is 10,00,00,000 satoshis (100 million), so 50,00,000 satoshis is 0.05 BTC. Choose satoshis next to the amount; the price is still per whole Bitcoin. The live price comes from CoinGecko only when you press Get Live Price, and nothing about your holding is sent.

The Bitcoin Investment Calculator starts from an amount in rupees and shows what it buys and could be worth. This one starts from the Bitcoin you hold and your average price, and adds the break-even and the price for a target profit. For other coins, use the Crypto Profit Calculator.
