Assumes equal buys at regular intervals, the last one a period ago; fees are not included. For buys at different prices, use the Crypto DCA Calculator.
Each buy has been invested for a different length of time, so the yearly return is the one rate that grows every buy, for its own time, to what the holding is worth now.
Short answers on measuring the return on a crypto DCA plan.
The real yearly return on a plan where you buy a fixed amount at regular intervals. If you have bought ₹5,000 of crypto every month for 24 months and it is worth ₹1,50,000 now, you have put in ₹1,20,000 and made ₹30,000, a simple return of 25%. The yearly return is 23.04%.
Because most of your money has not been invested for two years. Your first buy has been in for 24 months, your last for one, so on average the money has been invested for 12.5 months. The yearly return counts each buy for its own time, which is why it comes out near 23%, not 12.5%. This is the same money-weighted method as XIRR, which mutual funds use to report SIP returns.
Turning a short-term gain into a yearly rate magnifies it. One ₹5,000 buy worth ₹5,500 a month later is a 10% gain, which works out to 213.84% a year. Crypto rarely keeps up a month’s pace for a year, so when your money has been in for less than a year on average, read the simple return first.
Crypto profits in India are taxed at a flat 30% when you sell, plus 4% cess, and losses cannot be set off against other income. If the example above were all sold now, tax of ₹9,000 would leave ₹21,000 of profit and a yearly return of 16.32%. The 1% TDS and exchange fees are not included. For the full tax on a sale, use the India Crypto Tax Calculator.
Enter a deposit rate and the calculator grows each buy at that rate for the same time instead. At 7% a year, the ₹1,20,000 above would be worth ₹1,28,860.58, so the crypto plan is ₹21,139.42 ahead. Deposit interest is taxed too, at your slab rate, which this comparison leaves out.
It shows what your holding would have to be worth today for your plan to have earned 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% or 50% a year. The 0% row is the break-even value: the total you have put in.
The Crypto DCA Calculator works out your average buy price from the price at each buy. The Crypto DCA vs Lump Sum Calculator compares spreading money out with investing it at once.
