What you keep, as a return

Bitcoin tax follows section 115BBH: only your cost is deducted, not the sale fee, and losses cannot be set off. The other investments are shown before their own tax and assume a steady rate. Live prices are provided by CoinGecko. For the Bitcoin you hold, use the Bitcoin Profit Calculator.

How it is calculated

The rupees you put in buy Bitcoin at your buy price, after the fee. That Bitcoin is valued at the price now, and the return is measured against what you put in.

  • Bitcoin bought = amount invested ÷ (buy price × (1 + fee))
  • Value now = Bitcoin bought × price now × (1 − fee), what a sale would bring in
  • Tax = tax rate × (Bitcoin bought × price now − amount invested); nothing on a loss, and the sale fee is not deducted
  • ROI before tax = (value now − amount invested) ÷ amount invested
  • ROI after tax = (value now − tax − amount invested) ÷ amount invested
  • ROI per year = (what you end with ÷ amount invested) raised to the power of 1 ÷ years held, minus 1
  • Other investments = amount invested × (1 + yearly rate) raised to the power of the years held, before their own tax

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on measuring the return on Bitcoin in India.

The return on rupees you put into Bitcoin. Say you invested ₹5,00,000 when Bitcoin was ₹40,00,000, it is now ₹90,00,000 three years later, and you pay a 0.5% fee each way and 31.2% tax. You bought 0.12437811 BTC, which would sell for ₹11,13,805.97. That is a return of 122.76% before tax, or 30.6% a year, and 84.11% after ₹1,93,253.73 of tax, or 22.56% a year.

Because Bitcoin is often held for years, and a big total return can be a modest yearly one. The ROI per year is the steady rate that would have given the same result, so you can set it beside an FD or a fund. In the example, 122.76% over three years is 30.6% a year, not 40.92%, because each year builds on the one before.

Gains on Bitcoin are taxed at a flat 30% under section 115BBH, plus 4% cess, making 31.2%. Only what you paid is deducted, not the fee on the sale, and a loss cannot be set off against other income. In the example the tax takes the return from 122.76% to 84.11%. For the full tax picture, use the Bitcoin Tax Calculator.

The calculator grows the same amount at a yearly rate for each one, for the same time. The defaults are 7% for a fixed deposit, 12% for a Nifty 50 index fund and 10% for gold; change them to the rates you could have got. In the example ₹5,00,000 would be ₹6,12,521.50 in an FD, ₹7,02,464.00 in the Nifty 50 and ₹6,65,500.00 in gold, against ₹9,20,552.24 from Bitcoin after tax. Those figures are before their own tax, which is lower than 30% for shares and gold held long term, so treat the comparison as a guide.

Yes. The buy fee means your rupees buy a little less Bitcoin, and the sale fee lowers what you receive. With no fees the example would return 125% before tax instead of 122.76%. The buy fee counts as part of your cost for tax; the sale fee does not.

No. The exchange deducts 1% TDS from the sale under section 194S, but it is an advance payment of your income tax that you claim back when you file. It is part of the tax shown, not on top of it, so it does not lower your ROI. Use the Crypto TDS Calculator to see the amount.

The Crypto ROI Calculator works for any coin from a value you already know. The Bitcoin Profit Calculator starts from the Bitcoin you hold and adds the break-even and target prices. This one starts from rupees and a buy price, and sets the yearly return beside other investments. To project Bitcoin forward, use the Bitcoin Investment Calculator.
