How it is calculated

Each year’s amount goes in once, at the start or the end of the year, and the whole value grows at the yearly return.

  • Start of each year = value = (value so far + this year’s amount) × (1 + yearly return)
  • End of each year = value = value so far × (1 + yearly return) + this year’s amount
  • Yearly increase = each year’s amount = the first year’s amount × (1 + increase) raised to the years since
  • In today’s money = final value ÷ (1 + inflation) raised to the number of years
  • Real return = (1 + yearly return) ÷ (1 + inflation), minus 1
  • Monthly comparison = each year’s amount ÷ 12 at the start of every month, growing at the matching monthly rate

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on investing in crypto once a year.

What investing a fixed sum once a year could grow to. ₹1,20,000 at the start of each year for 10 years, at 15% a year, grows to ₹28,01,913.12 from ₹12,00,000 put in. After 30% tax on the growth you would keep ₹23,21,339.18.

Yes, a lot over many years. Money put in at the start of the year earns a full year of growth that money put in at the end does not. In the example, investing at the end of each year ends at ₹24,36,446.19, which is ₹3,65,466.93 less than investing at the start.

At a steady positive return, investing the whole year’s money at the start does better, because it is all invested sooner: ₹10,000 a month instead ends at ₹26,30,181.86, ₹1,71,731.26 less. Investing at the end of the year does worse than monthly. When prices swing, spreading buys over the year means one badly timed buy matters less, which a steady-return calculator cannot show.

What the final value would buy at today’s prices, after inflation. At 6% inflation a year, the ₹28,01,913.12 above is worth about ₹15,64,573.65 in today’s money, and the 15% return is a real return of 8.49% a year. India’s retail inflation has mostly run between about 4% and 7% a year over the past decade.

Raising the amount you invest each year, for example as your salary or bonus grows. With a 10% increase, ₹1,20,000 in the first year rises to ₹2,82,953.72 in the tenth; you put in ₹19,12,490.95 and the value grows to ₹40,07,010.16 at 15%.

It assumes everything is sold at the end and the growth is taxed at India’s flat 30%, plus 4% cess, with no tax on a loss. Selling and buying back each year would bring the tax forward and lower the final value. The 1% TDS and exchange fees are not included. For the full tax on a sale, use the India Crypto Tax Calculator.

The Crypto Monthly Investment Calculator plans backwards from a goal. The Crypto Weekly Investment Calculator counts the fee on each weekly buy. This one invests once a year, at the start or the end, and shows the result in today’s money.
